Disabling color writes

Generally yes, I would assume the hardware still takes the hit of the bandwidth for writing the entire pixel, by doing a read-modify-write and masking out the appropriate channels by simply writing back what it's just read (similar to a blend operation). However, you would need to profile it on a per-hardware basis to make sure there isn't any kind of optimisations going on.
