Angry note on the rating system
The highest damage I've ever done was +-25 points with a rating difference of around 1500-1600. I can see it being possible to get higher (like, the theoretical upper bound being 30), but for practical purposes, I think 25-27 is a good ballpark figure.
The point of the ratings system was to cut down on the amount of crap-posting we used to have around here. Overall, it seems to be working.
Mainly I think the ratings are a good idea, but,
(emphasis mine)
worries me from a freedom of speech point of view. (Yes, I know there is no freedom of speech in corporate entities such as gamedev.net, but surely places like the lounge are for the free exchange of ideas without fear of reprisal)
Maybe rating in the lounge should only be available to moderators and staff.

And it wasn't due to disrespect to/for others. Mainly, I stated my opinion, be it a very unpopular opinion. What can I say, I'm opinionated. (It was a political/religious thread though.)

The rating systems has done an excellent job at accomplishing the goals the staff had for it. The only changes you'll like see in the future are modifications to make it more fluid in terms of fairness (a badly made rating won't stick, though I won't explain the more complex mechanics behind why) and make it more opaque in several ways, to solve the one problem we have had with the system: people whining because a number below their post changed by a few points. You'll still be able to see good and bad measurements, and you'll still be able to compare with other people, but exact changes will appear qualitative rather then quantitative to the user.
Hey! Don't take my numbers away! I worked hard for them. You can give the dissenters graphs or something, but don't take away my numbers!!
I really do think that it works well overall. As near as I can tell, the only times I've been rated down was due to someone disagreeing with my oppionion, however this is really more of a statement of their maturity level rather than the validity of my oppinion. In short, it doesn't bother me and it really shouldn't bother you either. Just do like we all do in real life when some random person gives you their misinformed oppinion: laugh a little and move on.
The boards *have* been noticably cleaner since they were implimented. I also like knowing that I'm a positive force on the boards, though if only a little compared to some of the other users. The rating system has never, ever stopped me from posting anything I've wanted to say, though it has in some cases encouraged me to word a post to be more clear or less scathing (unintentional as it may have been.) If it encourages others to be more clear in their post and to abide netiquet more carefully then its definately a good thing.

It's worth bearing in mind that the GDNet Lounge is for game developers to be able to talk about non-game development topics that are of interest to other GDNet users. It's not for just anybody to say anything they like, nor is it a soapbox for your religious/cultural/national/political/sexual beliefs, or for you to use the lack of a topic to deliberately annoy people, or to push the boundaries of taste. Nothing can and should ever be free of 'reprisal', as that effectively means taking no responsibility for anything you say. If you want to come out and say something potentially annoying or offensive, you have to be prepared to accept that some people will not like that, and will use the tools at their disposal to make you and others aware of it.
So taking what people have said in this thread into consideration, then it is a form of self regulation/censorship more so than a reward type system. I can understand it if this is the way it is intended, but this is not the way I see it implemented.
I have no idea where you have drawn those 2 conclusions from. It is a tool to give someone a snapshot of your helpfulness and/or friendliness who may not know your posting habits, and it is a feedback mechanism to let you know what others think of your posting habits. The aim is to reduce 'crap posting', by adding consequences to your posts that did not previously exist, and with the exception of the resultant "I hate ratings" threads, this has succeeeded.
"It is a tool to give someone a snapshot of your helpfulness and/or friendliness who may not know your posting habits,..."
For what purpose? Why should does it matter how friendly you have been to somebody else. Really I just don't get it, in reality do you walk around with a flip chart attached to yourself and people give you a mark for being friendly?
"...it is a feedback mechanism to let you know what others think of your posting habits..." I would assume this is self regulation/censorship(or community regulation), but it just doesn't work out like that.
