Ok, uploaded my game.

Get it here.

The Game:

You are a famous barber specialized in arm pits (Hence "The Pits"). Be careful to satisfy your customers. Use enough foam, keep a steady hand and don't hurry while shaving the arm pits.

Your customer will only endure a certain amount of cutting. Keep the hair percentage in your mind and also watch for the endurance meter.

Move the mouse to move the brush or razor, push the left button to use it. Switch it by clicking on the bottom left part of the display bar or use the right mouse button.

There's five levels, i've not completed the last one, i have no idea if it can be done.

You can use Alt-Enter to switch between windowed and fullscreen mode.
BTW, the servers time is off by almost ten minutes ;)

Your game looks pretty darn cool. Way better than mine ([crying]).

Good job man!

Ah well, I only started about 3PM. Still it was fun having a bash - not enough to submit (or on time!)

That water(?) looks really cool. Is it animated?

aye it's animated - I was thinking about it as blue fire. I might finish it anyway and submit it to this thread. I know it won't be eligiable to win anything but hey I'm having fun coding it. [smile]

Thanks! Yours is a neat idea, too bad that the enemy movement didn't get in. It could make for some interesting designed levels. I would definetively try to get that in.

Here's some info about my game:

Title
The Pits (Original, eh?)

Original Concept
You're on a race car pit crew. For some reason you have no crew members.

The game is played in rounds, each of which are a single pit stop by your race car.

As the single pit man, you have to jack up the car, change worn out tires, fill up the gas tank, and clean the front of the car in as little time as possible.

Before each round, a list of what needs to be done is given to you. You have to remember the list as well as perform all the required actions as quickly as you can.

You lose the game when you fail to make all the required adjustments under a certain time limit (each round has a successively shorter limit).

Actual Game
In each round, you have to replace the car's worn out tires. There is no time limit or clock; you can not win or lose. [lol]... [crying]

Screen Shot

Yeah...

Obviously the graphics were supposed to look a little nicer, and there was supposed to be a gas can, a jack, and a bucket along with the tires.

Oh well, I tried. I certainly learned from the experience.

If anyone wants to read one, I can type up a post-mortem of sorts.

I think you have me confused with some one else [smile]

I actually thought it looked a lot like blue fire. That's why I put the question mark in there. So fret not - it still looks really cool.

Here's an updated version.

Since the contest ended an hour ago, the previous one should be judged, but this is slightly more like what I intended to make.

It's 860 lines of very ugly C# code split between 2 files.

Since so many people don't finish their projects, could we possibly extend the contest to 5 or 6 hours in the future, while still keeping the ascii/console requirement? That would give us more time to flesh out the gameplay.

I just played your game. Great job! Your idea was very good, and your implementation was great as well.

My biggest complaint: It's really hard. It took me like a dozen tries to pass the first level. I couldn't pass the second. Still, that fact that my only major complaint has to do with the difficulty curve (something that takes a good deal of time to get right) implies a lot about the quality of your entry (it's very good!).

Dang, sorry for the confusion :)

nagromo: Quite a difference with the enemies in. And it beeped at me!

extralongpants: Nifty idea, did you finish an executable? It'd be interesting to see how you planned the whole thing to play out.

I just tried out your game. Good idea - it's simple, but easily scalable. If you included the concept of 'rooms', it would probably extend the gameplay a great deal.

The game was a little too easy - I only got hurt a couple of times and beat it on my first try - and it took me a while to find my avatar at the beginning of the game, in all the graphical chaos.

Good job though. You got the game to a can-win-or-lose state (certainly beyond the state of my game), and your idea was creative.

Here's a the uploaded game, if you want to try it out: clicky

Of course, in its current state, it's more of a chore than a game. [lol]

PS. I honestly don't know if it will even run. I didn't get to try it out on another computer before I uploaded it.

Nice idea. I like especially that you have to carry the tire from the correct side. This could be made into a nice arcade game, imagine the enemy having his men walk through your pit and miscarry stuff ;)

That would be cool. I also thought about having other cars zoom down pit road, so you could get hit if you didn't time it right.

Sorry I missed the contest folks, but I had terrible luck. The night before the contest, I was delegated an obfuscated electro-magnetics question. I am half way done, having been pounding at it since 8:00AM (2:74PM now) this morning. [dead]

Okay, the judging is complete (Finally!). Far and away, Endurion is the winner for this contest. He had the most original concept and the most complete gameplay. Very nice, I congratulate you.

Picking second place was much harder, but we have decided that extralongpants is #2 and nagromo is #3.

My library of games is available here. Endurion can PM me with his three picks and nagromo can PM me with his one. Extralongpants should PM me with his paypal account so that I can send him the cash for the 3 months of GDNet+ membership.

Finally, one of the judges had a few comments. My comments were mostly the same, just much shorter, so there isn't any need to include them.
Quote:

Endurion ('Arm Pit Barber'):

A great little game, and a good use of the theme. I liked the good control system, and the ASCII graphics were extremely well done for the game type. The sound effects were a valuable addition, and the little ASCII face to show the customer's expression was a nice touch. The only main problem was that it is hard to figure out how to play and the correct use of the razor (possibly because I use an electric shaver ;)), although once I "got it" I was able to make it through the game, although it was still very challenging and suprisingly entertaining. A high score table would be nice addition.

Overall, very impressive!

extralongpants ('Pit Stop Mechanic'):

I thought the concept was fine, and the graphical use of the ASCII was reasonable. Unfornuately I had some trouble with the fitting the tyres to the car; it wasn't intuitive about where to place them and I frequently had trouble replacing the tyres of the right. Often a tyre would be dropped and the poor little mechanic couldn't pick it up again. I am also not sure if there was a timer working; I was not sure what the little flashing light at the bottom of the screen was for. There was also the problem that if you hold down a direction button when fitting the last tyre then the instruction screen will be skipped. The main problem though was that as it stands the game is a bit dull; if you were able to put in a few more features it might have been a bit more exciting.

Not a bad attempt by any means, although it would have been more fun with more challenge in the game, and the control issues meant I had to dock half a star.

nagromo ('The Prison Pit'):

This game reminded me of the classic ASCII games I used to play; a smiley face nagivating through a treacherous maze of symbols. I thought the general concept for the game was okay, and the graphics were fine (that's what most ASCII games are like!), although the game was extremely similar to the game you submitted to the previous 3H contest ("The Stars"). It was a pity though that you could not finish the enemy movement in the time limit though. However, even in the version that has active enemies the game is still pretty easy.

Not too bad a game though!

Woot, thanks a lot :)

Also congrats to the other contestants, all very interesting interpretations of the topic. I thought a lot would go for a jump'n'run kind of game.

Anyway, i've updated the game to host a bit more variety of targets. This may offend the one or other, so download and play at your own risk:

The Pits Second Edition.

Still no highscore, but saves your progress and delivers 20 shave targets ;)
