Post significantly changed…if you’re following this that is. Rules on Google Docs. Thanks in advance to all who may comment on this. I really do appreciate it. I know it's a lot to get through (print it up and leave it by the magazines in the bathroom...lol). It's not nearly finished. Just about 2 weeks worth so far. I'm not planning on getting it published seeing as the wargame market has been saturated for the last 20 years. But i will make a few copies for myself and one as a gift for a buddy. I'm doing this cause I needed a serious break from my pc game project. One can only think about spaceships for only so long. But i think this would make a neat little browser based game or maybe ...there i go thinking about video games again...;) This is similar to Axis and Allies. It's a little more micro in some areas and a little more macro in others. But it's in the same vein. Thanks again... EDIT...replaced the posted rules with a link to Google documents. It's easier to read. Much has changed. Rules on Google Docs. I've decided to print the map on vinyl. I'll post a pic of it in a few days. Printing on vinyl has a number of advantages. I can roll it up and transport it in a tube and spilling my beer wont rune the game board. BUT its $12 US a square foot to print it at Kinko’s. the game map is 30x32 inches. Quite expensive but obviously ill be printing up test maps on my own printer in B&W. The game pieces have been decided upon. main Divisional playing piece. What I’ll be doing is purchasing these hollow plastic pyramids (I’ll get 1,000 for about $80 US). I figure I’ll need 250 to 300 of them. I could probably print pyramid patterns on paper, cut out and paste together but the cost of good paper, ink, and glue would probably be more than $80. Grey for Germany, OD Green for the US, Dark Red for the Soviets (what color for the British? I was thinking Deep Blue or Tan) The idea is I am going to design stickers, print them on sticker paper, and apply them to the pyramids. Infantry, Mechanized Infantry and Armored Division stickers. Each nation will have unique stickers…maybe. Don’t know if I’ll use images of a typical Russian soldier and a T-35/82 OR if I’ll simply use the NATO divisional symbols for everyone. And it’s perfect for me because the pyramids are hollow and they can stack! Saves room on the game map and hides your units from your opponent! I’m pretty excited ;) Let me tell you, it’s a relief to be able to build a game on your own. As much as I love my PC game development partners I don’t have any 3D artists, sound engineers, programmers etc etc to worry about. It’s all me and it’s quite a good feeling. We do specialise in videogames here, but a board game design is perfectly welcome in this forum. In the past we've also had threads about card and pen&paper style games, they're just something a bit out of the ordinary here. I'd highly encourage you to also try a more specialised community in order to get the best possible feedback, but there's no problem with posting it here. [smile]

ahhh fantastic! thank's Kazgoroth. I'll post this evening.
oh, and thanks again for letting me post 10,000+ words about a board game :D
One of the places that specialise in board games is the Board Game Developer's Forum (www.bgdf.com).

I occasionally visit there as designing board games is also a hobby of mine. I think there is also a crossover between board game design and computer game design (not just that they are designing games), but board games can be used to prototype computer games and computer games can be used to extend the concepts of board games.

Personally I have no problems with discussing one or the other, but forum rules are forum rules and over at BGDF they don't like to discuss computer games (and RPGs are a slightly taboo too).
i know of www.bgdf.com too. they dont discuss wargames either. why? who the hell knows. i guess they think wargames are to far removed from, say, a 4 player version of chess.
One time, long ago, my friend and I dreamed of having a flat-screen display under a glass gaming table that would display the board and keep track of who's where, and arbitrate combat. The computer is so good at managing detailed rules for a game like you have described that, if you have any programming skill at all, you should consider at least writing an aide de camp program for the game, that would track economic things and help with combats.

I have an old Axis & Allies clone I wrote in VB that I wanted to sell to Hasbro. I sent them a proposal about two months before they announced their own implementation. (Mine is better!) If you're interested in going that route, I could be persuaded to part with my source code.
The rules are well written, but whether they work and are fun is very hard to tell.
If you made a PDF with draft quality counters and maps, on the other hand, I could easily convince my Axis&Allies fanatic friends to playtest your game.

thanks for the input guys. i appreciate it.

guess what? i lost almost everything! my flash usb fob died on me. i had a bit of the earlier stuff backed up on google docs so i had to begin again.

i rewrote it all and it's much easier to read. MUCH easier.

if you like, it's here with a bunch of new rules.

LorenzoGatti, i do have a map as a PSD document. it took me forever to build but its dead sexy ;) i'll take you and your friends up on the play test offer but i dont know when. counters are expensive to produce.

Merlin, I have thought about it. deeply. i dont have any programming knowledge myself. otherwise i would be building it right now. the art side, that i can do with no trouble.

see...now you got me thinking about it again...
Have you thought about using A&A pieces? There are a number of companies that produce additional piece sets, with different type of units, such as half-tracks and jeeps. You can buy used A&A games on eBay cheaply, if something is missing or damaged, such as the board.
