DDSURFACEDESC2 storage

While reading through several Direct Draw tutorials, I noticed that the authors all have a global DDSURFACEDESC2 variable that they use to create their surfaces. It seems to me that a local variable would do just as well in these cases. Is there any particular reason that these authors chose to use a global variable instead of local ones? CM
