Hello everyone. We're developing a custom application which makes intense use of OpenGL to render images in a pbuffer and reads the contents back to deliver it. The application is working very good on linux server system, but we have the hassle of eliminating all possible apps, drivers, running elements to speedup everything. The application makes a little initialization via glX calls and then uses only gl commands. We use currently NVIDIA hardware and direct rendering. XOpenDisplay glXQueryVersion glXChooseFBConfig glXCreateNewContext glXCreatePbuffer glXMakeCurrent loop { glViewport(0, 0, mWidth, mHeight); glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION); glLoadIdentity(); glMatrixMode(GL_MODELVIEW); [....] glVertex() [...] glReadPixels() } Since the gl hardware is the LOCAL MACHINE hardware, and Xwindow is necessary only to acquire a context, we are trying to eliminate Xwindow, in other words, to get a "offscreen context and a pbuffer", without having to do with a XDisplay reference. Is this possible, with some tricks or EXT / XEXT functionalities ? If so, we would not need to install xwindows and run it on the final servers. Thanks in advance for any suggestion. Lucio Cosmo

What if you load OpenGL drivers directly, compiling-in required (if any) part of x-server functionality? I think it has pretty standartized interface.

It's what we are doing these weeks :) but it's not so easy.

I was wandering if anyone had a similar problem and if there was a simpler solution. I can't believe there isn't one. "direct rendering offscreen without xwindow" is not so strange.

Thanks.
