wigets art: handcrafted or generated

I was wandering how do most games handle the problem of GUI art assets: do they use runtime generated or handcrafted graphics for buttons, dialogs, etc. I've seen games that I'm pretty sure use generated widgets however if you take a look at WacraftIII/WoW it is hard to imagine the GUI graphics are generated at run time (I'm talking about buttons, windows and panels not in-game HUD which is handcrafted no doubt)

Most quality UI work is done by hand. However, they're rarely designing each piece individually. They'll design things like the image for a window background, the corners, the borders, etc. The textures are designed so they can be put together like a puzzle to create many different types of windows and panels. Kind of a combination of hand drawn and generated.
