DirectX SetTransform

I'm getting my bearings around SetTransform since I've never used it before. I'm using sprites, but I'm skipping over the ID3DXSprite interface, since I'll be doing 3D next year and I wanted to make sure I knew how vertex buffers worked. So I wrote my own sprite class and got it rendering. I also it moving and transforming using SetTransform, thanks to the many tutorials on the subject. However, the problem is that these tutorials don't address the next obvious step... multiple sprites. Modifying the world matrix changes every sprite. So... is there an easy explanation on just changing individual sprites, without locking and unlocking the vertex buffers?
