I wan't to focus less on getting geometry into my scenes so I was hoping someone could reccomend a good model loading API that works under OpenGL. I would love it if it supported as many features as possible (ie materials, bones etc.). Also I hope the code is fully optimized and up to date(ie. use of vertex buffer objects). I hope I'm not asking for too much :)

It's easy. Look up Milkshape 3d - it's format is well known and available in their sdk. Also has bones/skeletal etc.

MS3DLink

In fact they even have an example model loader for animation which you can steal. Also
nehe.gamedev.net
One of their tutorials has an example loader for ms3d models - although this example isn't for animations.
NeheMS3DLoader

Better still - MS3d can import from loads of modelling formats saving you the hassle of having to buy expensive tools upfront.

Cal3D is the way to go for you. It is a library for skeletal animations and has good import export plugins for max, maya and blender. It takes care of exporting bone, mesh, material and animation data for you. The package is render API neutral and has excellent examples for both OpenGL and DirectX renderers. The library is also easy to integrate with a game engine/application.
