I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions and tips to consider when building these. also any links to open source code that i can use and/or read would be appreciated. Im Coding in C++ and using OpenGL.

One thing to remember is that it's nearly identical to a chat-box, with an interpreter tied to the input rather than (likely) a single chat function. This helps quite a bit with abstraction and allows for more informational resources to be available for you.
