ID3DXAllocateHierarchy: Extracting Effects when creating mesh containers

Could anyone tell me how to get the QUANTITY of effects received from CreateMeshContainer( THIS_ LPCSTR Name, CONST D3DXMESHDATA *pMeshData, CONST D3DXMATERIAL *pMaterials, CONST D3DXEFFECTINSTANCE *pEffectInstances, DWORD NumMaterials, CONST DWORD *pAdjacency, LPD3DXSKININFO pSkinInfo, LPD3DXMESHCONTAINER* ppNewMeshContainer ) As you can see you get a set amount of meterials but no effects... YOUR GEEKY WISDOM IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
