DX and OGL and one stupid totally n00b question

Recommended Posts

Dear all, I feel the need first of all to ask for forgiveness... I am on my first steps in C++ and I do have this question: I use 3D Studio max for my models/animations (and I brag to be a good designer). Can someone please explain why do I need DirectX or OpenGL besides C++ and 3dS max??

C++ itself does not support graphics output, only text. That's because it's designed to be pross platform, and it's used on some systems that don't have graphics output capability at all.

Direct3D and OpenGL (And Windows GDI to some extent, but only really 2D) give you a set of functions and classes you can use from C++ to interface with the graphics hardware. A bit like an extension to the language, if you will.

You create the models in Max, load them with C++ file access functions, and then pass the vertices, textures, etc to Direct3D or OpenGL to render.

Actually, we like it if the modeller wants to learn how to program. It makes discussing things much easier.
