Games surprisingly Good.
Shinobido - I was so done with Tenchu, they'd become really repetative and frustrating but this game, OH what a game. Seriously if you were/are a fan of this brand of stealth game Shinobido is the natural progression and is far superior to it's predecessors.
shadow of destiny and silent hill 2!
quite close to the date when both were released i decided to give them a rent. however to my surprise they were quite good... then something unexpected happened. i went back to the video store to sadly return the games... and the place burnt down! thanks to that i have been able to play them a ton.

You did a good job with the gasoline and matches!
Shooter: Space Shot.
I was expecting a bad budget shooter
but Shooter: Space Shot was an awesome game with an amazingly bad translation.
I loved the dodge boost feature.

There's a game called Castle Of The Winds, which I the first RPG I played probably. I had it in school, and it was the only game there so me and my friends always played it, although it looks quite bad (maybe I'm just comparing it to today's graphics). Actually I got the game once in a trip to Europe...I think it's less than 1MB, which is a terrible waste of a CD-Rom :)

Blast Corps
A N64 gem by Rare. Commanding a demolition squad to pave the way for a nuclear bomb on wheels through lots of unique levels was amazingly fun. I hated that god damn dump trunk (Backlash). I hope we see a Virtual Console release.
Siren
My brother lent me this and its one helluva tough game. It almost changed my position of Silent Hill as my favorite survival horror. Mix a Silent Hill-esque style with a thick Japanese atmosphere and an emphasis on stealth. No 'arcade' weapons (sorry no shotguns or chainsaws here), weak characters, REAL puzzles, and a twisting and turning story. Recommended for SH fans!
Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter
Next to BOF3 this best game, IMO, in the series. Everyone I knew bashed it but I decided to go with my gut and I was not disappointed. Strategy based battles mixed with an interesting game system led to a RPG that wasn't just another hack n slash.

Yes! Always good to find another Quest for Glory fan. You should look up the other games in the series [1, 4].
LOL, don't worry about that, I played them all. It was so nice to cast spells, even if just for practice. But I liked the first best, don't know exactly why, maybe because they changed the graphics style and increased the dificulty of the puzzles (I remeber it was so hard to throw dust into that air elemental)... And I loved that simple music in QG1 - it sound good even on the pc speaker [smile].
I heard some people work on some remakes similar to those of King's Quest I and II. For example: PICTURE
I'm a big Quest for Glory fan too, although I wouldn't list it as "surprisingly good" as I expected it to be good [smile].
My favourite is the second one though, Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire. I'm eagerly awaiting the fan remake by AGD Interactive which has been in development for ages, but I expect judging from their previous remakes of the King's Quest games that the end result will be superb.
I take it you've already seen the preview (see 06-13-06 entry about a third of the way down the page)?
I have a couple to add or agree with...
First, Dragon Force on the Sega Saturn. I played it when I was younger and never really got into it, then just all the sudden fell in love with it after seeing it again for the first time in a couple of years. It's a brilliant strategy game, one that I still play through at least once every year.
Secondly, like someone else said, Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter. It was seriously bashed by most but I really got into the cel-shading-esque style and gameplay. Very cool.
And last, Final Fantasy XII. I played the demo and thoroughly hated it, then went and bought the game out of blind devotion and love it. It's just classic Final Fantasy fanboyism for me.

In terms of games surprisingly good I'd have to go with the following. I think there are a lot of great games already mentioned, but many of them aren't really suprisingly good, it was known they were going to be good.
Tribes I and II - Amazing multiplayer experience.
Sacrifice - Fun gameplay that is very addicting.
Star Controll II - I agree for the same reasons already listed
Lego Star Wars (any) - It seems very gimmicky, but sit down with a friend and a copy of this game, and you will have a good time.

the longest journey was great, it seemed boring at first, but it got really interesting and cinematicish later on, though it is difficult.
Panzer General 2: When you can find the exact scenario that the history channel is describing, you know it's an awesome yet educational game. The game also came with a manual that accurately describes military tactics and a huge strategy guide.
Completely surrounding Michael Wittmann's Tiger unit in Normandy only to have it kick your ass is humbling. That's when you bring in the B-25's...
Pretty much the best game ever.
