Visual Artifacts when using Hardware vertex processing

Im writing a simple game in C++ using DirectX 9. The graphics card is an ATI Radeon X800 XT. When I use software vertex processing the game runs fine with no problems whatsoever. However when I change to hardware vertex processing artifacts appear on the screen. It runs perfectly the majority of the time but rogue triangles occasionally flash up on the screen for a fraction of a second and then dissappear. Im not sure if this is some crazy byproduct of my GPU running too hot at the moment as Im having temperature problems on the system. Any advice/information is greatly appreciated. If any code fragments are needed or further information let me know and I will supply it :) Uni
