I'm pretty sure bones are used in RTS games to animate the models. I used to draw everything in immediate mode way back so I'm always cautious about sending data over the BUS. So would having 10 bones per animated model be a hassle? Right now I'm doing keyframing but it takes up way too much memory.

I'm used boned models in the RTS I'm working on, although the number of characters visible on screen at any one time will be roughly 10 at most, max of about 30-40 in a mission, each one with about 26 bones. Sadly still skinning in software as I'm totally lost on how to make MD5Mesh models GPU friendly.

Keyframe animation should be ok for you if you have lots of units, but only if the characters are low poly - you should be able to interpolate between frames and have animation at about 10-20 FPS.

How many models you looking at having on screen at any one time? And how complex, ie, number of polys?
