Mesh Coloring

Is there any way to color a mesh without using lighting? Or, is there any way to restrict the coloring of a mesh to only that mesh? I'm drawing a vertexbuffer with positioncolored vertices, and some 3D text and when I try to color the text it colors the vertexbuffer.

Among other things, you could look into IDirect3DDevice9::SetMaterial or use a vertex/pixel shader.
