3D Character "Accessorizing"

I'm developing a concept for a game that requires a high amount of "accessorizing" of a 3D figure. For instance, mix-and-match clothing, equipment, weapons, and so on.

Is it feasible to have one figure and do all this "accessorizing?" Or should I give it up now because assembling all this at run-time is cost-prohibitive?

Thanks.
