.net framework and d3d

DirectX is a native OS-level component but it does have a set of .NET-accessible interfaces - "Managed DirectX."

If you're not using/developing .NET applications you don't need the MDX parts of the runtime. It all depends who built the installer as to which files are listed for installation...
