I want to use a 4096 x 4096 texture for my system. Will this be compatible with all cards relevant that are out there? My 7900gt supports it all the way down to my FX5200, but will others? Thanks for knowledge on this, Devin

Short answer: no. nVidia has support 4K for a while, while ATI mainly supported 2K. Even then, most nVidia cards barely had the RAM for it. A 4Kx4Kx32bpp texture is 64MB. I think it's more useful for 1D lookups (ie: 4Kx1, or 1x4K).

The "Graphics Card Capabilities" document in the DX SDK (accessible through the sample browser) may be of some help. Basically, Radeon X1x00 family and GeForce from 3 and up support this, but older Radeons only support 2048x2048.

Thanks guys,

I think even at 2048 there should be plenty of area for me to do my task.

Sirob,

Chris' database was useful and interesting to say the least. Wonder how he compiled all of that data. A real great resource and thanks for pointing me to it.
