OpenGL OpenGL 16bit pixelformats

Hi, This is in further response to a topic started yesterday about OpenGL and whether it supports 16-bit pixelformats for images and textures and the like. I now know that it does (after being pointed in the right direction by you guys) ;). Now what I want to know is how to use these formats with an alpha channel. Sure I know that format R5G5B5 has an alpha channel but what about R5G6B5?. What technique (if any) should I be using so that I can can mark certain pixels in a texture that are not drawn?. Should I use some sort of masking technique?. Any suggestions/comments appreciated, MAMEman.
