ZIP format for my package files

Hi guys, I was wondering, are there any licensing issues to know about if I use the zip file format for storing my game data? Much like Quake 3 uses zip for .pk3 files Thanks.

No, you don't need to worry about patent issues for zip files.


The zip file format is described many places; it is a container for ten or so other compression algorithms. Almost all of these compression algorithms are also described in RFCs, and they all the algorithms have a brief section discussing known legal issues.

One of the compression algorithms, the 'shrinking' algorithm, was potentially hindered by the LZW patent and was not widely used while the patent was in force. Since the patent has expired a few years ago, none of the RFC's zip algorithms have legal hindrances.
