I want to learn Java. Can anyone recommend a good compiler, (preferrably free) and a good book to start with? Thanx

Sun's Java site has tutorials for all their APIs. While they aren't always consistent, or not up to date, they contain more than enough to get you started.

From downloads you need J2SE JDK (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) but without EE.

That one comes pre-packaged with NetBeans IDE. I consider Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org/) superior though with regard to features and power.

'DR Java' is quite a good IDE, Eclipse is also a good one as mentioned above but I think it is some what overkill like alot of IDE, a basic one is needed when you first start out, once you've grasped the basics of Java then you can start learning the benefits of more intricate IDE's that offer a profiler to access memory usage etc...

try them all LOL, I have about 4 on my system at the moment Ha.hahaha, NetBeans, DR Java, JCreator, Eclipse. for speed of development out of that lot is JCreator IMO
