Odd question: tree trunk formula

Hi, i'm just curious to know if there is a formula that could approach the generation of a palm tree trunk. Thanks for any help.

How do you mean? I presume you're talking about the bark of the trunk, as viewed from the outside (and not the cross-section, after cutting it down), but are you looking for a texture or a mesh?

Sorry if i didn't explain it more in detail: i'd like to generate the trunk 3d mesh (so the geometry). In the case of a palm tree, the trunk it's similare to a cylinder smoothly bent on a side ...
I believe that the 'scales' on the palm trunk follow some pattern related to fibonacci spirals. But I don't know the details...
If you mean the general shape of a palm tree, you could probably get a rough approximation with some sort of spline curve, parameterized in a way to limit the resulting curve. Then you'd extrude the cross section of the tree along that spline (while scaling the cross section to make it more narrow as the height increases).
