I personally like Editplus. I've been using it at work, it's got some cool features. I haven't written any code with it, but the highlighting is great for html, css, jsp, etc.

I've been doing the demo of e-TextEditor, which is a Windows clone of the awesome Textmate editor on Mac. There is a license fee that will apply once its out of beta, but the software seems really nice... it's very extensible through TextMate bundles.

I used to use Crimson Editior, but I prefer the ConTEXT editor these days.

Its really personal preference though, I like ConTEXT's UI better. They both have tons of free highlighters and are very easy to make new ones for.

Notepad 2 is very nice for smaller things. Extremely light weight and supports many languages.

[Edit: I mean Notepad 2, not Notepad++!]

What makes a code editor useful? I've only ever edited code in the IDE, and I would be thankful if someone could fill me in on the benefits of a code editor.
