support DX9 with a DX10 game?
I just started on a new project which won't be done for years I'mm guessing if I even finish it but was wondering if I should even support DX9 when I'm already going to support DX10. From what I've seen DX9 performs better but I know DX10 is supposed to. Would it be a waste of time to support DX9 for a game that won't be done for years?
My opinion is yes cause there are always people which don't have money to upgrade their pc's in years so keep supporting 9 as a fallback for people the wanna play it but don't have a next generation computer which is fully dx 10 supported.
But that's just my opinion :D

If it won't be done for years, I don't think there's much point in trying now to have a DX9 fallback, unless you're doing that for the exercise. IMO sticking to just DX10 will make it easier for you to finish the project and release it, and when this happens, if you see that a lot of people are asking for a DX9 version, you should be able to make one.
I would tend towards the 'go with D3D10 only' route, but you really need to define your target audience.
If you're going for hardcore gamers then definitely D3D10 - within a year most/all of them will have D3D10 hardware and in 2-3 years they'll be on 10.1/11 hardware more likely.
If you're going for casual gamers or the low-end of the market then D3D9 is probably a good idea still. Windows Vista runs the GUI through D3D9Ex so D3D9 will be a prominant API in some form for at least the lifetime of the Vista OS. Most new PC's will feature hardware to support Vista but not 'proper' gaming hardware, so an SM2/D3D9 card might still be common for a long time.
