Good modelling for DirectX

Hello. I am starting with DirectX and a got few questions. How to model an objects to use them easy in DirectX.? Let's assume that I got object which is built with 3 elements. Should I join this elements to 1 object? It is a SAM-Site ( some kind of rocket launcher ). It has a 'torso' , 'shoulders' and 'head'. I don't know which method will be good. One object or 3 objects. I ask because I don't know howto manipulate specific parts of an object. When I join this 3 elements into 1 so how will i know where the elements start ? Is there any method which can join an object into 1 but it will have a 'logical' structure which can provide me access to 'torso',shoulders and head. Thank You for any clues. Sorry for my English :)
