large character count

Hey, Just wondering, what techniques could one use to display a large amount of characters/models in a 3d game? I'm thinking something like a huge army of zergs in starcraft2 :P Thanks

Try searching around for some info on the "total war" engine - I've definitely read some articles where they explain how they display 10's of 1000's of soldiers on screen at the same time.

My general understanding is that you need a very, VERY good LOD system. All the way from your proper artwork through to imposters/billboards.
