MDX - Mesh.DrawSubset crashed with effect

The effect works fine with a textured quad. i load up the sphere model that comes with the directX samples and it shows textured fine without the effect. when i begin a pass on the effect i get a Direct3DException on on Mesh.DrawSubset. Any ideas?

That got it. The vertex shader has colors, the mesh didn't. Thanks. Rating++.
