So it's getting to that time of my life where I need to start cracking down and creating a portfolio for my potential employer(s). My question is simply, should I build my own game engine/graphics API etc. or create it all myself? For example; Create a game using the SDL library, or build my own game from scratch using Win32 code and my choice of D3D or OpenGL? Also, hints about what to demonstrate would be helpful. What are employers looking for in my portfolio? Please do not tell me the outright answers, just a nudge in the right direction please, I want to figure it out (for the most part) myself :)

Depends on what you want to do in the industry. If you want to do networking, then doing a solid 'game' that shows you understand the problems that are associated with networked games and how you compensated for it will help. It will also give something to talk about in the interview.
