hiya i just registered on this site after reading through the fourms for a couple of hours. i've been searching for something to help me get started with game programmning for the last few days.. i'm completly new to game programming as such. i have experience in "regular" programming; c++, java, and whatnotts.. but i've never tried to make games. i've always wanted to try it though. i dont expect it to be easy or anything but i love challenges, so i thought i wanted to start off with a "simple" 2D game. supermario kinda deal and i was wondering if there was any engine out there i could use or if i had to code it myself.. not entierly sure how to start.. Villy.

There is both.
We have information on game programming in general here.

Most people here normally code their 2D game (especially anything that's Atari 2600/5200/7800 or NES level game) from scratch. For more complicated games (for example, 3D) they normally use engines.

Good luck!
