Blending light trail texture

Hi All, I guess this is a bit of a newbie question, for most of the people here, but still.. I would like to render a light trail behind moving objects. I've prepared a feathered circle bitmap in Photoshop, and I would like to use it as the texture of the light trail. I was wondering, how should I blend the quad (with the texture) to yield the desired effect (a glowing disk). Should I load the bitmap as an alpha channel, or as an RGBA texture ? thanks in advance, Vince
