Jobs for someone with a BFA?

Recommended Posts

I'm starting my graphic design major in a few months and working towards a BFA. Even though drawing isn't my strongest point, I'm very creative and was wondering what jobs I could get in the gaming industry?

Hello FM,
I wish we had a magic answer for you, but gee. The question is a little vague. The IGDA website has a great overview of graphics jobs. http://www.igda.org/breakingin/path_art.htm

And maybe GameCareerGuide.com has something along these lines too. Oh, and hey. Maybe THIS site has something along those lines? Did you look?

Another tip is to crack open the instruction manuals for video games and see the job titles listed in there.

Ya gotta do research, guy. And "research" doesn't mean "asking on a forum."

I have a BFA. It's not a magical degree that means anything I do gets shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art or even a little SoHo gallery. It's not an albatross, either, where I can't get a job doing anything else. Tom Sloper is correct, and even check out his site, because it's a wonderland of information. The downside: you have to read it all and comprehend it yourself.

Which brings me to my point. Your degree is only as good as you are. I'm not talking about how well you draw (or program or whatever). You need to be able to go above and beyond minimum requirements. You need initiative. Drive.

You asked what job you can get. Don't even put gaming industry at the end of it, because it's like any other job. You can only get the job where you learned to do what they need, and where you come across as someone they want to hire. Your college career guidance office would probably have several books or pamphlets on how to interview well, how to make a good resume, etc.

Good luck.

We are hiring! We have two new projects, and need artists and programmers of all experience levels.

The caveat is that you would need to move to the Salt Lake City area, but if you want to PM me I can get you all the contact information you need. Ads are already in the Jobs section of the board, and on lots of web sites.

Of course, if it comes through me I get a referral bonus, so I prefer the PM rather than just redirecting you to the job listings. :-)
