Semi-transperancy (C++)

For the people here this will probably be easy
I'm making a little point & click game/application, my background is a pre-rendered 3D room used in C++ as a bitmap background
The room is dark and the player should be able to look around like with a flashlight
This is what I mean, little example
The flashlight circle should be around the mouse pointer. What would be the best way to make the outer edges of the circle less transparant so it looks a bit more realistic
What you're looking for is anti-aliasing.
I'm no expert on the subject, but if you Google it, you might turn up a few tutorials that could help you.

It's called feathering. Most image editing tools can do it.
Here's a transparent 500x500 using a white feathered circled with a scratch texture. Looks better on black.
