After C++...

Hey guys, I am a newbie on this forum, so I'll introduce myself. I am Abhimanyu from India and I have a huge interest in game programming. I didnt know where to start from and then Google landed me on this site. I checked out the books section on this site and saw 'Beginning C++ Game Programming' by Michael Dawson. I started reading that and have almost completed it. I think my handle on C++ is pretty decent now. But now I dont know what to do next. There are so roads branching out - more C++, OpenGL, DiretX! I have no clue. Could you guys guide me? Thanks!

really depends on what you want to do,

nehe has some nice opengl tutorials

SDL is a nice easy library for 2d games

opengl and directx are real time rendering library's, they are the base of almost all 3d games that are made

there are a number of "engines" that use opengl or directx or both like OGRE3D, they run on top of the library and give you a more abstract feature set but you may want to learn how the lower levels work before you try using them

SDL is a simple 2d drawing library

if your just getting started then i will recommend the opengl tutorial i posted, although, most of the core concepts of real time rendering are interchangeable between opengl and directx and i have found opengl easier to learn

So would you consider doing OpenGL a good transition from C++? Because I was doing C++ now and didnt want this learning to go to waste. I have heard OpenGL can be used with C++. Is that true?

Well, if you are in on programming games (not game engines)
you should probably start with a decent engine.

so, here are some roads:

if you want to create a game:
is it 2d?: Use sdl or hge
is it 3d?: Use Ogre (thats the engine ive used, and its really great)

if you want to create an engine (or graphical demos):
3d?: Opengl or DirectX ( Opengl has a smaller learning curve, while directx gets more updates(i use opengl, so i dont really know much about directx))

2d?: Opengl , DirectX or sdl

if you plan on using opengl i strongly recommend checking out sdl's window creation, since it is much easier to get an opengl window through there than use windows code

yeah, and its darn easy to
well, you will not transition yourself from c++
c++ will be your core language
opengl just gives you some functions wich you call in your c++ code
(like vertex plotting etc)

If your biggest question in game development is what graphics API to use, then I'm so, so sorry for you. Toy around with DirectX and OpenGL and see which is best for you. Maybe using Ogre3D (which I'm considering myself) may be the best route for ya. Either way, knowing what "effect" you want graphically is much more important than which API to use. Once you know that, then decide.

I'm using an adaptor class for graphics at the moment. Once I've got the game done and want to change over, I've only got the adaptor class to change.

Don't get too hung up on graphics. Build your game and make it work... then let me play it. ;-) Just build the components you need to build your game and then make it all happen. Btw, just build the game, don't think about building an "engine". It's just... safer that way.
