drawing vegetation?
Hi, I'm trying to add vegetation to my landscapes now and I have some really nice meshes for em but they are the billboard types. Yah know flat pannels put together and a texture on the panels? I've never done vegetation before and honestly have no idea how to do it. What I need to do though is find a function or something that will cull the parts of the mesh that are not textured with leaves or what not and leave me with some nice looking plants. Anyone know of such a thing for directX or something else?
What you're looking for is alpha blending. It involves placing an alpha mask in your texture, which will control the level of transparency of your texture.
Alpha blending can be slow, though, because it requires some expensive shader operations and back-to-front rendering. Cheaper alternatives exist, such as alpha testing.
