HI there, Anyone know of a way to map different textures to the different sides of a primitive? Is it best just split the primitive into different sides?

Sure, or replicate a few vertex attribs.
You really have no choice, unless tomorrow everyone buys a video card with with multiple attribute-index streams!

Duplicating geometry is probably the best way to go. There is another option for shader model 3 cards (GeForce 6x00 and up, Radeon X1x00 and up -- practically all cards being sold today) which is to use the vFace register, which tells the pixel shader which side of the polygon is being drawn.
