Okay, here's my idea guys. Head to the bathroom first, so your bladder will be empty before I give you this earth-shattering, traffic-stopping idea. I'm going to make an MMORPG that's about MMORPGs. Wait, don't send me a donation/first born children just yet - it gets a lot better. But do write the check and address the envelope while you're reading this, so you'll be ready by the end. I'm picturing it being like Oblivion but better, with midieval space combat in real-time, bullet-time, pizza-time and sleepy-time. It'll have user-generated content that's run interactively by full-time admins chained to desks in war-torn countries. It'll also fax actual soda and doritos to people willing to pay for the premium subscription. Your character will be an overzealous teenager who doesn't quite understand the scope of difficulty needed to create such a game and is convinced that he can make it himself in a few months. You'll be able to put statistics into attributes like "soda chugging", "fake screenshot generating", and of course "nay-sayer flaming". The goal of the game is to think about, but not actually develop, an MMORPG. Your character will be able to cruise websites and forums to waste time and plug their non-existent game, and will level up with each forum they get banned/driven out of, or every fanboy that they manage to dupe. If your character actually begins coding the project, he will slowly lower in "Inexperience points" and may possibly lose levels... so you definately don't want to go down that road. Eventually, extremely high level characters would be able to trick a team of other Player Characters into forming a "Dev-Team", where they can use their attributes combined to further their fake screenshot generation and forum spamming. "But Wait!" You say. "What about Raids?" Indeed, I have not forgotten. Your "Dev-Team" can raid other "Dev-Team"'s poorly-written websites and spam them with advertisements for your poorly written website, and earn the devotion of fanboys and the spite of intellectuals (equivalent from a "loot" perspective in the game). There'll also be epic-level gear, like in World of Warcraft(TM)!!!one1 For instance, the "soda can hat" will allow you to consume twice the amount of caffeine while not needing your hands to leave the keyboard, which will allow you to waste away your days and spam even better. The extremely elusive "Girlfriend" loot will be equippable as well to a few lucky participants, but it will require an extreme upfront cost and frequent upkeep. In return, however, the girlfriend will complain about how you should do something with your life (freeing your character from having to make such statements to himself) and will eventually leave you for a good looking NPC with a convertible and a job. Bonus! So, what do you think? I'll post some fake screenshots later, and if you want you can join my Dev-Team and we'll go spam the "Duke Nukem Forever MMORPG" website. (heh, figured the forum could use a quick joke. I thought of it while browsing some old threads while avoiding my own work [my actual idea isn't an MMORPG, just to note =) ] Anyways, don't flame me, I'm not actually going to make the game proposed above... just hoping someone'll get a kick out of it. ;) )

I'll be as frank in this reply as I was with President Tony Blair of the USS Enterprise, Captain Verona. Your idea sucks. I've not seen such a poor idea since my meeting with Prime Minister George Foreman of the USS Enterprise, sir. Sir, I suggest you rethink your strategy of design entanglement premiums and instead point towards an opposing dialect of accent, if you follow my drift.

Yes, boobs. Your idea needs more boobs, and it's as simple as that.

I'll come back later to check on your process of augmentation. Until then... godspeed, you crazy son of a whore.

It needs work.

However, your check is in the mail! This game will be a great addition to my current line-up which includes Sim Producer. Maybe we could integrate this new idea into Sim Noob : Online (which will be the sequel to the hit original, single-player game Sim Noob).

Cheers

In all honesty, I stopped reading there. If you would handle your "idea" a bit more professional and realistic, one might read through.

EDIT
After scanning through real fast:

This made my day.

So being a Ninja in this game would be to blatantly steel someone else's idea.

Grinding would be creating lots of strange topics in the hope of getting your rating up/working obsessively on a design document.

Um, that's about all the MMORPG terms I know. Please try and include "shoulders" in this game somehow, my friend did some horribly repetitive crap for hours just to get a pair of l337 "shoulders" in WoW, quite possible the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.

Why not just make a game about what these MMORPG's are really about, playing dolly with your avatar Barbie style :)

te he =) Glad it made some of you laugh ;) Perhaps I should've put the warning that's on the bottom of the post on the top... looks like someone already took it seriously. Thankfully you gave it a second glance. ;)

And Dazco, I'd be glad to collaborate with you! Shall we commence procrastination on your forum or mine? ;)

EDIT: I originally wasn't going to post the joke above because some people might take it seriously, but then I saw a post where someone described their potential MMO as "like oblivion but better". I couldn't contain it after that. "I'm picturing it being like Oblivion but better, with midieval space combat in real-time, bullet-time, pizza-time and sleepy-time." ;)

My apologies if the thread's off topic, I'm a sucker for satire. =)

You, sir, are a genius. :P

That idea made my day. I was actually in a very bad mood until I stumbled upon this masterpiece.

Good show, old chap. ;)

A good source to show you and others on what its like to create a MMO from outside the industry is this reality video blog of a guy determined to create a mmo called Kaos war

http://www.games.net/article/feature/112341/creating-kaos-a-groundbreaking-reality-series/

Theres about nine episodes in total.

Oh, yours, definitely. We can start posting... tomorrow. I'd post today, but some of the people on the Sim Noob forums have been around so long that they are no longer noobs. It's going to take me most of the day to get around to deleting their accounts.

I guess we can do it on mine, but I haven't really *put up* the forum yet. I have to install something, I don't know what. I'll look into it next week sometime, or somewhere around there, and then I'll begin thinking about installing whatever it is I need for that.

Just slip the five in my pocket.*

* - Extremely obscure reference. My props to anyone who knows the reference. Think saturday morning cartoons in the late 80's/early 90's. =)

Some day a game studio running low on ideas will actually make a game similar to this :). Watch it happen.

Bonus points for whining about how Microsoft refused to cut you a huge contract when you sent them an email about your amazing idea. Those idiots!

Aye, I think that would be the equivalent of a bonus round. You get 30 seconds to spam as many boards with Microsoft hate messages as possible.
