[web] Technologies used in web based MMORPGs?
Hi
First off, I don't want to make a MMORPG. I am just interested in finding out what technologies are commonly used in making a web based RPG. I have a couple of things I want to try out that are similar to web based MMORPGs but just a lot smaller.
I have my suspicions on the technologies that are used I just want to make sure I know what my options are and which ones to use together.
Thanks for any help.
PHP & MySQL is really all you need. I'm developing one now (after a few that I never finnished completely), that just uses PHP to output dynamic content, and MySQL for users, items, stats, etc., etc., etc.
Nothing special is needed for web based mmorpgs. Hope that answers your question.

You could also use JSP/Java & a database
or flash & a database
or <insert technology that can talk to databases> and a database
-me

I'm thinking of making one too although its very different from most would think when they hear MMORPG. I'm just making an RPG-like game that has an emphasis on community and supports having lots of simultaneous players. Also note that a web based MMO is far less work than a real time one.
I would post the project in help wanted if I could get my best friend to make up his mind on how he wants this made. Maybe I should make it without him...
Anyway, I'll be using PHP and MySQL along with XML (as little as possible), XHTML (not strict), CSS, RSS, Atom (possibly, not sure if people use Atom still), javascript, Flash (very little, not used for navigation), possibly Java, possibly C#.<br><br>The minimum tech requirements for such a project are:<br>1) A web server with enough bandwidth, space, an support for the desired technologies (PHP, MySQL)<br>2) Server side software (PHP scripts, Java, C#, etc)<br>3) A relational database (MySQL, or some other SQL)<br>4) HTML<br><br>How good are your web development skills?
