is there an easy to way to read the properties of images such as when it was taken, camera model, and last modified for example? a better example would be in windows explorer, in the context menu (right-click), your sorting options. i know in vista there are TONS of options to sort your files by. XP has very similar options too. could someone help? thanks.

Get a library that does it for you.

Note that every image format has its own way of storing this kind of information, if it does at all.
ive started looking around some more and i realized that EXIF data would be the way to go. is it stored similarly in images?
You'll want Exif not EXIF.

The first is extension of existing formats.

JPEG (and possibly other formats) have always had support for meta-information. So look for various libraries which take care of that.

There is however no uniform way, in the same way MP3 may support additional information, Windows offers plug-ins which handle each format independently - they just share the same GUI.

what kind of plugins are you referring to? is there any way to extract the data from windows?

ive started looking at exif, and im noticing that most image editors do not re-save the exif data because its difficult to deal with. exif is in its best shape straight from the camera.
