how to convert .png format into .dds format in program

I know microsoft have a tool, but i need to do this in my program. thanks!

I'm not sure you can do it in your program unless you want to learn the formats and learn how to convert it your self. Why don't you want to use a tool?

The DDS is a relatively simple container format. It is documented in the DirectX SDK, under the heading "DDS File Reference" in D3D9 references section.

While DDS itself does not imply using the DXTn compressed formats, I assume you want to support them. The specifications for the compression schemes can also be found in the SDK, in D3D9 programming guide->getting started->direct3d textures->compressed texture resources.
