I have an idea of a program for a smartphone which lets you stream sound through wifi into an application on a computer which then sends the sound to another application, in this case a sip client. Or something similar. Basically you would be using the smartphone as a microphone and headset. Could this be done? I'm asking because I don't want to spend alot of time reasearching and then find out it's not possible.

I would say you could do it, but there could be latency issues. If you've ever used VOIP with a slow connection you will know how annoying it is. There is an echo of your voice, so you end up stopping speaking when you hear yourself and they do the same. It makes for a really frustrating conversation.

Maybe you could have a way of detecting when the person is talking (kinda like how a speaker phone works), and bulk send out the packets from one phone to the other, then switch as needed like a walkie talkie. It might be a way of dealing with the latency but I have no idea how effective it would be.

I would do some speed tests, and you will have to use some sort of compression like GSM.
