Game Dev Hardware?
I'm planning on going to college next year for game development for four years. Therefore I wont be doing any high end development but i wouldnt rule out going as far as modding half life 2 in my spare time. What would you guys reccomend for a laptop setup to be able to efficiently go through game development in college? If laptops are too insufficient, could you give me an example of a good desktop?
As long as it has enough RAM and a Shader 3.0 gpu, the rest shouldnt be a problem. RAM was the biggest problem for my laptop, but its easy and cheap to add more. 2 GIG minimum. A dual core CPU would be sweat too, you'll need multithreading skills on a real parallel system to code the games of tomorrow. But thats optional...
You should check the noise factor, too. You dont want a laptop that become embarrassing to use in a conference room or in the student lounge.

Haha, I would say just get the best that you can. The only limitation is what you can afford and whats available. I don't think you'd be saying: "Damn, my new laptop is too powerful and too fast to make games" lol.
EDIT: Though I do prefer desktop computers over laptops. They seem to be cheaper (in most cases) for what you get. Thats my opinion, but if your planning on needing to take your computer to school or elsewhere, then definitely get the laptop.
