3D Mesh Format

I've just started with DX10 and found that it no longer has any way of easily loading .X files (at least, without DXUT). Basically, what would be a suitable file format to use to store meshes/animation? I'm looking over the FBX SDK, but it seems a little overkill right now... Thanks in advance ~ Slug
