Megatexturing -- what is the benefit?

I am a big fan of both the original Enemy Territory, and the Quake Wars beta. (From the little I have played of the beta.) Now, I was planning on creating a mod for Enemy Territory, but after hearing about Quake Wars, I think that I want to do it with that engine instead. But, after reading about the Quake Wars enginge, I am puzzled. With the megatexturing that they are using, where the entire level is one texture, I understand that it will take a load off of the drawing code. However, isn't this going to mean insanely long load times in the beginning of each level?

As far as I know, the megatextures are dynamically streamed at runtime, so only a small part of the texture will have to be loaded at startup.
