Written by one of the world's top game designers, this book describes the deepest and most fundamental principles of game design, demonstrating how tactics used in board, card, and athletic games also work in video games. It provides practical instruction on creating world-class games that will be played again and again. View it here. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing, by Joel Dreskin Marketing is an essential but too frequently overlooked or minimized component of the release plan for indie games. A Practical Guide to Indie Game Marketing provides you with the tools needed to build visibility and sell your indie games. With special focus on those developers with small budgets and limited staff and resources, this book is packed with tangible recommendations and techniques that you can put to use immediately. As a seasoned professional of the indie game arena, author Joel Dreskin gives you insight into practical, real-world experiences of marketing numerous successful games and also provides stories of the failures. View it here. An Architectural Approach to Level Design This is one of the first books to integrate architectural and spatial design theory with the field of level design. The book presents architectural techniques and theories for level designers to use in their own work. It connects architecture and level design in different ways that address the practical elements of how designers construct space and the experiential elements of how and why humans interact with this space. Throughout the text, readers learn skills for spatial layout, evoking emotion through gamespaces, and creating better levels through architectural theory. View it here. BAAHHHH. so i got all the files for it off http://webpages.charter.net/tatenjen/ and i got the directx 8.1 sdk all installed.. and i''ve pointed my compiler at all the include files.. and it''ll compile directx source code that i''ve got from a CD that came with Windows Game Programming for dummys, but when i hit f7 on this BaseCode1 Project (all the files listed at the beggining of this thread have been included) it comes up with

Compiling...GameMain.cppc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(87) : error C2146: syntax error : missing '';'' before identifier ''lpDD''c:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(87) : error C2501: ''LPDIRECTDRAW7'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(87) : error C2501: ''lpDD'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(88) : error C2146: syntax error : missing '';'' before identifier ''lpDDSPrimary''c:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(88) : error C2501: ''LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE7'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(88) : error C2501: ''lpDDSPrimary'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(89) : error C2146: syntax error : missing '';'' before identifier ''lpDDSBack''c:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(89) : error C2501: ''LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE7'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(89) : error C2501: ''lpDDSBack'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(90) : error C2146: syntax error : missing '';'' before identifier ''lpDDSRes''c:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(90) : error C2501: ''LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE7'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(90) : error C2501: ''lpDDSRes'' : missing storage-class or type specifiersc:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(94) : error C2146: syntax error : missing '';'' before identifier ''lpDI''c:\gdn\basecode\globals.h(94) : error C2501: ''LPDIRECTINPUT7'' : missing storage-class or type specifiers

etc.. etc...
it won''t do that on the other projects i got built off the source given to me from the windows game programming for dummy''s cd.. so why is it not finding the directx includes in this project? AHHHHHHHHH. *pulls hair* please help?

i have the same book as you Infused.
that CD uses DX 6.1.
Teej uses DX 7.0.
therefore you''ll have to make modifications to the code so it''s DX 6.1 compatible/usable.

hope you still have your hair

i got the directx 8.1 sdk on my computer. the code from teh book compiles fine so the compiler is finding the files.. but when i try to compile teej's files.. it doesn't work. it spits back tons of errors and acts as if it doesn't know where the include files are.

you could:
1. look in the ddraw.h file and change the hex define to 0x0070 you''ll see it

2. make the file local to the compiler. meaning don''t have the compiler search in other folders to compile the program. basically make 4 new source files add them to the project. then copy and paste Teej''s code to the new source files. remove Teej''s files from the project and compile.

sometimes compilers get real iffy when the sources and headers aren''t in the same directory as they are....

no wigs please hope this helps :D

heh thanks for offering some advice. I''m using MSVC++ 6.0. i don''t think those are the solutions to my problems though. i''ll keep tinkering. see if i can come up with anything. thats what i''ve been doing for the last half hour anyways. thanx for a helping hand. maybe offer some words of encouragement?

i''m using VC6 too.
right now.
so i know your pain.
like right now.
my arrays won''t assign to each other.
and when i port the code over to Dev-C, it gives me all these errors about the code not being ANSI compilant.

[words of encouragement]Cheer up! MS doesn''t make too much faulty software. I''m sure Teej was using VC6 also. It''ll work don''t give up! [/words of encouragement]

try the second suggestion. it worked for me when i was having similar problems with some code i was writing.

Good Luck!

ALLRIGHT! through rigorous trial and error and picking apart the errors and what i had to get accomplished... i have now got the file all compiled and ready to do more stuff. oh baby oh baby. i love it when things work. Gives you a sence of accomplishment.. espeacially when u worked hard to make it work

basicly it was just the compiler being finicky. thanks for all the help. much appreciated.

If I really knew what I was supposed to do to fix all those, I would really, try. But I''m hoping some of you may have an idea?

Thanks for any help, I would really like to participate in this project.
