Anyone tried this little trick for tile blending?

First I made my tiles 48x48, but had the tile slots 40x40, so the tiles were bigger than the map spaces. Then (used VB cause I don''t know enough VC++ to try it there) I used PaintPicture to paint them in overlapping each other and used one of the opcodes (don''t have it on hand) to blend the tiles into each other. Anyone ever tried it, and is there a better way to do it? (And don''t say "use C++" or some annoying comment like that, please.)
