Can someone explain the projection matrix? (DX8)

Can anyone explain to me the projection matrix? I need enough detail so that I know, for example, what vert values would put an object at the extremes of the screen etc. The DX8 sample docs don''t do a very good job of explaining it. A tutorial link would be good too, but I haven''t seen many that specifically talk about the DX8 version. Thanks, Tom
