c++ reading access error when reading tga file

hello, i am trying to write a TGA loader. here is what i have so far
	FILE * filepointer = fopen(filename,"rb");

	int width, height, depth;
	byte header[18];

	fread(header, 18, 1, filepointer);

	width = header[13]*256 + header[12];
	height = header[15]*256 + header[14];
	depth = header[16] / 8;

	const unsigned int pix_size = width * height * depth; 

	GLubyte * pixels = (GLubyte * )malloc(pix_size);

	fread(&pixels, 1, pix_size, filepointer);

the last line crashes with a reading access error. why? thanks!

The value of pixels is the address of the allocated buffer, not the address of pixels. Try this:
    fread(pixels, 1, pix_size, filepointer);
