I've tried googling for this without any luck on where to start. Say I want to program a chat bot that can keep a user occupied for as long as possible, where should I start? I know it's been done and I see sites like the personality forge, but don't know where to start from scratch. Also, most of what I find are based on one on one interactions. Is it feasible to have a bot respond to group interactions?

Well, there is tons and tons of ressources and free source code around. Google "chat bot" and the very first link seems a good resource. Create a believable chat bot is a mix of having lots of data and a few good tricks (smoke and mirrors...).

As for group interaction, search psychology, linguistic and creative arts publications for models of group conversation. When you find a suitable model, tweaking the chatbot to follow it should be easy.
