Anyone ripping off a 4E4 or 5 project?

I have an RTS engine from my 4E4 project. It had some further work done after that contest, where it basically sucked. I spent those 6 months working from scratch to get an RTS engine and had hardly any time to build a game. This year I could resurrect that and actually make a game, and quite easily incorporate the elemnts. But it seems a bit cynical. Is anyone else using an engine from last year or the year before? Is anyone taking an entire game and changing the content?!

I didn't make game for the last contest. However i was working on a platformer game for last 2 months. I had literally 0 content and some rendering and collision detection routins as 4e6 was announced, so i'm using it to make my entry.

I don't think there's something wrong with using things you've done yourself. If people are allowed to use free engines, then it's more then ok to use your own.

I just hope I'll finish my project since i've never made a game before.

Oh I never questioned whether it was "fair" or "right". I'd encourage people to use what they have. Just wondered who was - it's tempting to start over and get away from your old clunky code. I'd argue that's a bad idea in most cases. Cool as it would be to use C# & XNA, I'd still be more productive using my 5-year-old DirectX 8 C++ engine.

I certainly scrounged as much stuff from previous projects as I could for my 4e5 codebase, though it didn't amount to much: I scrounged the input and DirectSound streaming stuff from my NES emulator and my basic entity framework from a little tutorial dealie that I wrote (but never released).

Most of it was from scratch though, but if I'd had anything that would have worked for what I wanted, I would have used it.

I say do it, as long as it boost productivity! I'd rather see great games built off of old code than okay games built from scratch any day of the week.

I'm doing a Mop of Destiny remake. I figure the original author probably won't notice.

If you can pull that off, then I'll get started on "Pony Loves Accountant".
I don't think porno games are allowed.

I think "Accountants love crystals" would be better. ;)

In any case, if we choose to go with Python and OGRE this year too, I'm sure we'll start off by making a copy of the game we started on for 4E5. But that code doesn't have much game specific stuff really.
